Harvester’s Orphanage and School

In south Sudan I got the chance to visit Harvester’s Orphanage.  It was started in 2001 by Dennis and Lillian Klepp after being compelled by the Spirit of God from hearing a message about the plight of the orphans and widows in the south of Sudan.  This ordinary couple from Wisconsin simply heard the words “Sell all you have and give it to the poor.”  After prayer and probably major deliberation they did just that;  sold all they had, and left all that they had known and sought after the greater calling for their lives.

Within the first minutes of being there, a little guy by the name of Aqui ran up to me and gave me a big hug around the legs.  I swooped him up and he laid his head on my shoulder.  His openness stunned me, and I soon saw a similar trusting and loving nature in all of the kids.  The orphanage has over 100 orphans they house and take care of, and the school enrollment is over 400, some orphans and the others kids from the area.

Dennis and Lillian’s story inspires me, BIG TIME.  Not just because they are bringing love to the unloved, but that these are just ordinary Americans, like me, that have hard-to-leave roots, just like all of us.  They heard the call of God, decided not to ignore it, and went.  IT’S POSSIBLE, we don’t have to be super Christians to do things of such heroism!

They need help, if YOU are compelled to help check out their website:

The guy on the right is Aqui, just after the photo he ran up to me and gave me a hug.

  1. What an inspiring and humbling story! What amazing gift they are giving and, I’m sure, receiving from these precious little souls. Great shots too, of course. Thanks for sharing this.

  2. oh my heart! do they need anyone to come help them? :)
